It was underrated in terms of its technology internally. It’s like all the best old buildings in Liverpool, they’re often better inside than outside. I mean the Oriel Chambers is a very fine cast iron frame but the outside is all glass and Tudor detail. It was the same with the Sailors’ Home, it had sort of a Tudor feel to it, it had turrets on the corner and twiddly bits everywhere, some of which fell off as time went on. It was a superb building internally but it was all timber, a cast iron frame but timber partitions and they had a disastrous fire about twenty years after it was built and it was all rebuilt with the same frame. It’s underrated as a building; it deserves a historical study, a proper one.
