My mother got me the job in order to get me home from Norway where I looked like I was going to take route and because it combined my two major interests of Norway and shipping. I remember walking into the branch manager's office and more or less saying (how I had the brass neck I don't know) that yes I would take his job thank you very much but only provided I could have X, Y and Z as holidays because I was leading a guide camp in Norway on those dates, so I know it was 1964. The company were ships’ store merchants / ships' chandlers and they in fact covered the gamut of hardware, provisions and fresh provisions.
