John Donnelly was born in County Armagh, Northern Ireland in 1892, the son of Peter and Judith Donnelly. The family home was at 271 Derby Road, Liverpool.
He was employed as a fireman in the Engineering Department on board the Lusitania and was killed when the ship was sunk.
His body was never recovered and identified afterwards and as a consequence, he is commemorated on the Mercantile Marine Memorial at Tower Hill, London. He was aged 23 years.
