John E Fitzgerald was born in 1874 in Castlelyons, County Cork, Ireland. He lived at 58 Ivy Lea, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.
He was a professional merchant seaman and had sailed on previous voyages with the
Lusitania. He signed on at Liverpool for her final voyage to America on 12 April 1915 as an electric attendant in the Engineering Branch, at a monthly wage of £5.0s.0d. He was granted an advance on his wages of £1-0s-0d. He reported for duty at 8am on 17 April before she left the River Mersey for the last time.
He survived the sinking and after being landed at Queenstown, eventually made his way back to Liverpool.
