John McEvoy was born in Jonesborough, County Armagh, Ireland. He married around 1891, but no details of his wife or any family they might have had is known.
He was a professional seaman in the British mercantile marine, and served on board the final voyage of the
Lusitania as a refrigerating greaser in the Engineering Department.
He survived the sinking.
John McEvoy continued to serve on ocean liners for many years after his survival, primarily on the
Lusitania’s sister ship, the RMS Mauritania.
