George Bates was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England in 1898, the son of William Henry and Catherine Bates.
He lived at the family home, 128 Sandy Road, Seaforth, Lancashire, and was employed as a Stewards' Boy in the Stewards' Department on board the
He was killed as a result of the sinking and his body was not found and identified later. As a consequence, he is commemorated on the Mercantile Marine Memorial at Tower Hill, London. He was aged 17 years.
