James Andrew Johnstone was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England on 17 April 1892, the son of James and Mary Frances Johnstone. In 1915 the family resided at 96 Church Road, West Derby, Liverpool. James senior was a Ship’s Steward and his son followed in his footsteps.
He was employed as an assistant engineers' mess steward in the Stewards' Department on board the
Lusitania and was killed when she was sunk. He was aged 23 years.
His body was not recovered and identified afterwards, so he is commemorated on the Mercantile Marine Memorial at Tower Hill, London.
