Ann Jane Roberts, always known as ‘Annie’, was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, on the 6 November 1879, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Ann Roberts. She was unmarried and in 1915 lived at 17 Harthill Avenue, Mossley Hill, Liverpool. Her father lived at 66 St. John Road, Bootle, Liverpool her mother being deceased by that time.
She was a professional stewardess in the British Mercantile Marine, and served in the Stewards' Department on board the
Lusitania, one of nineteen stewardesses who sailed with the ship on her last voyage, on 1 May 1915. Only six of these survived and Stewardess Roberts was not amongst this six. She was aged 35 years.
Her body was one of the first to be recovered from the sea afterwards and it was landed at Queenstown where it was given the reference number 60, before a positive identification was made. After this had been done, however, it was buried on 10 May 1915 in The Old Church Cemetery, Queenstown, in Mass Grave C, Fourth Row, Lower Tier, where it remains today. 10 May was the day when most of the victims of the sinking were buried, following a long procession from the town itself.
Despite her having an identifiable grave site, this was not known by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and as a consequence she is commemorated on the Mercantile Marine Memorial at Tower Hill, London.
However, once this information was given to the Commission by the author, it agreed to erect a permanent memorial to her at her grave site at some time in the future and also stated that should it ever be necessary to renew the panel at Tower Hill, which bears her name, it would be omitted from the new one.
When her will was proven on 5th July 1915, administration was granted to her sister Miss Ethel Roberts and her effects amounted to £146-9s-04d (£146.47).
