King's chest

Nation's money

treasure chest with hinged lid, heavily reinforced with metal straps

Because of the large amounts of money being collected by Excise Officers, it was important that a safe place was found to keep it until it could be transported to the Treasury. Wrought iron strong boxes like this were used. The box has two padlocks, but the main lock was hidden under a plate on the lid with a seven bar mechanism.

This chest was used in Liverpool Custom House c1750.
