Background information on National Museums Liverpool

Established in 1986, National Museums Liverpool is one of 12 national museums in England and Wales, and the only national museums group within an English provincial city.  We are governed by a board of trustees and supported by grant-in-aid through the government's Department of Culture, Media & Sport.

We hold outstanding collections - well over one million objects covering art, history and science. Many of these collections are displayed in our venues (outlined below), which will be joined by the Museum of Liverpool, opening in 2010/11.

Our activities include initiatives to widen public access to our collections, and pioneering work with interactive exhibitions, demonstrators and role-players. We offer special services for schools, programmes of temporary exhibitions, public events, lectures and courses. We also carry out and publish research into our collections and on fine and decorative art, natural sciences, social, industrial and maritime history, and archaeology and ethnology.

Admission to all of our venues, events and activities is free.

Forthcoming Museums:

Museum of Liverpool

The Museum of Liverpool will be one of the world’s leading city history museums, reflecting Liverpool’s global significance through its unique geography, history and culture. Liverpool’s first new public building of the 21st century, it will draw on National Museums Liverpool’s vast collections and give access to over 10,000 objects, many of which have never been on public display. As a vital part of the legacy of 2008, when Liverpool becomes European Capital of Culture, it will express Liverpool's confidence as a great, modern European city. Opens 2010/11.
