Archaeology
Our Field Archaeology Unit is one of the longest established departments working in the north west of England. It began in 1977 as part of a Merseyside County service, initially with the support of Liverpool University.
Our remit is to undertake archaeological research in the north west. This has involved excavations and field and aerial photographic surveys, which have produced evidence for several sites of all periods in Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire.
Since 1992, we have also carried out archaeological work arising from the planning process administered through local and county authorities in liaison with archaeological planning advisory services. The unit also routinely seeks out such commercially funded work.
These pages also contain information about our events and publications, as well as our staff. Developers and others can also learn about our commercial archaeological services. These can be tailored to suit any project, from small house extensions to multi-million pound developments.
