Monthly surgeries

If you have an interesting find that you would like to find out more about, you could bring it to one of the following monthly surgeries. One of the finds liaison officers will be available for identifying and recording finds at these drop-in sessions.

  • Grosvenor Museum, Chester, Vanessa Oakden will be available on the second Friday of each month, 10am-4pm
  • Bolton Museum, Frances McIntosh will be available on the third Thursday of each month, 10am-4pm
  • Manchester Museum, Frances McIntosh will be available on the third Friday of each month, 10am-4pm
  • Salt Museum, Northwich, Cheshire, Vanessa Oakden will be available on the last Thursday of each month, 10am-4pm

Opinion service

The Weston Discovery Centre at World Museum Liverpool holds opinion services on the first Wednesday of every month, 2pm-4pm. These are drop-in sessions and cover archaeology, ethnology and decorative arts.

One of the archaeological finds liaison officers for the North West and the assistant curator of Decorative Art and the will be available to give opinions on anything from ceramics, jewellery, silver and other metals, local history, archaeology, antiquities, coins, ethnographic material and antiques. Although valuations cannot be given, you may be able to find out where something is from, its age or what it's made of.

Displays

You can see a small display of metal detected finds recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme, in the coffee shop at the Salt Museum in Northwich, Cheshire. This is a permanent display, but the objects will be changed about three times per year.
