MMM.2002.66.4

About this object

Providing cigarettes for soldiers was a popular fund during the First World War. However, not everyone thought that sending large numbers of cigarettes to troops was a good idea. On 3 October 1916, a letter from physician Thomas Fraser appeared in The Times stating:
‘It is fully recognized by medical men that excessive smoking is injurious.’
