This powerful documentary, screened to accompany the exhibition April Ashley: Portrait of a lady gives rare access to some of the first generation of transgender women, including April Ashley. In the mid-1950s to early 1960s these pioneers visited ‘miracle doctor’ Georges Burou at his practice in Casablanca to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Their experiences and how life changed as a result is the focus of I Am a Woman Now.
Join Homotopia and Transforum afterwards to discuss the film’s themes.
