Catherine Hegarty MBE founded a signing choir in 2001 to promote and develop social inclusion at a local Liverpool primary school where she works as a communicator for profoundly deaf young pupils. The choir began as an after school club with 12 young people from the school, one of whom was profoundly deaf. As numbers increased so did support of her idea to develop a city wide Liverpool Signing Choir.
The young people of the Liverpool Signing Choir captivate audiences wherever they perform. They gave a spellbounding performance of John Lennon's 'Imagine' at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games and also had the honour of performing the National Anthem at the opening Ceremony of the Paralympics in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
