Doreen Khan

Doreen with her husband Badhur and children Anwar and Edress, late 1950s.

Doreen Khan

Doreen Khan, daughter of Rasool and Elsie, was born in Sheffield in 1929. She moved to Liverpool with her family when she was 17 years old.

Doreen worked in her parent's shop on Stanley Road and toured with the Pakistani Theatre as her father's assistant 'Zareena'. Whilst on tour in Helsinki in 1952 she met Bahadur Khan. The couple married two years later and moved to a shared house in Kimberley Street. Badhur was a merchant seaman and worked away from home a lot whilst Doreen brought up their three children, Anwar, Edress and Hussain.

In 1963 Badhur got a new job working on the buses so that he could spend more time with his family. He spent the last 16 years of his life at Plesseys on permanent nightshift. Doreen started work at the Metal Box in Aintree in 1967. She became involved with the Pakistani Centre when it first opened in the early 1970s.

Doreen retired in 1991 and still lives in Liverpool.
