Chaman Lal Khanna

Chaman Lal Khanna was born in 1923 in the Kapurthala district of the Panjab. His father was in the cloth trade and when Chaman left home he set up his own business in Amritsar.

In 1949 he married Satya Vati Kaura and the couple had two daughters. Although business was good Chaman wanted to make a better life for himself and his family. He came to Liverpool in 1954 and stayed with Lajpat Vij.

Starting out as a pedlar he worked hard to get a home ready for his family's arrival the following year. Chaman opened his first clothes shop in Huyton in the early 1960s. Two more followed and in the 1980s he also established a successful wholesale business.

During this time he was a prominent figure in the local Indian community. Campaigning to establish a place of worship in Botanic Road in the 1960s and as Secretary for 12 years. Chaman passed away in 1994. Satya continued to run the family business until she retired in 1997. She lives in Manchester with her son.
