Salgram Vij

Salgram Vij was born in Talwan in 1903. He studied law at Lucknow University and was an active member of the Congress Party in the 1920s and 30s. He left his family and came to England in 1931 to avoid arrest by the British authorities.

Salgram settled in Wigan but was unable to practice law. His only option was to become a pedlar so that he could send money back home to support his wife and children. He worked hard to build up his business and eventually opened a shop in Liverpool city centre.

Salgram moved to Laurel Road in Liverpool in the early 1940s. He welcomed relatives and friends arriving from India to his home, including his nephew Lajpat Vij. He provided them with food, clothes and money whilst they looked for work and accommodation. As he began to spend more time at home he also helped to look after his nephew's children. Salgram died in 1955.
