Faiths and festivals

Expressing belief

Religious belief is part of people's identity and personal life. It is expressed within the wide community through the establishment of churches, mosques, synagogues and temples. These buildings are part of the history of the city's built environment.

This section of the former City Lives gallery, in which local people talked about their faith in their own words, included:

  • a copy of The Holy Qur'an
  • information about the city's two cathedrals
  • the ten incarnations of the Hindu God Vishnu
  • Khanda, the powerful spiritual symbol of the Sikh faith
  • a Chinese home altar

Music and festivals

Traditional music and festivals were important to many communities, bringing people together, creating a sense of belonging and maintaining links with their cultural heritage.

By starting clubs and societies, opening community centres and celebrating festivals, communities have continued to express their music and cultural traditions.

This part of the gallery highlighted the vitality of these traditions through costumes, recordings, instruments and video. Highlights included:

  • the colour and drama of a Chinese processional dragon
  • the Irish Centre and the famous Liverpool Céili Band
  • recordings of the steel bands of a Caribbean carnival
  • a magnificent Welsh choir that is over a hundred years old
  • the Feng Shui principles behind the city's fabulous Chinese arch
