Historic Environment Records (HERs) are key to the management, research and promotion of the historic environment.

There is a HER in each county/unitary or group of metropolitan local government areas of England. They contain information on all aspects of the historic urban and rural environment (eg archaeological remains below/above ground and underwater, artefacts, historic place names, buildings etc) usually in the form of a computer database with back-up of documentary and cartographic local sources.
