Visitor information

the Museum of Liverpool Life

The Museum of Liverpool Life closed its doors on 4 June 2006. We are currently building a brand new Museum of Liverpool, which is expected to open in 2010/11.

Object donations and object surgery service

If you have an unusual object that you would like us to see, or if you would like to donate somethng to the collections, our curators are still running a weekly object surgery service from the Merseyside Maritime Museum.

The Weston Discovery Centre at World Museum Liverpool holds opinion services on the first Wednesday of every month from 2pm-4pm. These are drop-in sessions and cover archaeology, ethnology and decorative arts. The assistant curator of Decorative Art and the archaeological finds liaison officer for the North West will be available to give opinions on anything from ceramics, jewellery, silver and other metals, local history, archaeology, antiquities, coins, ethnographic material and antiques. Although valuations cannot be given, you may be able to find out where something is from, its age or what it's made of.

Alternative places to visit

There are still lots of museums and galleries to visit in Liverpool and the surrounding area. In the Albert Dock you can go to the Merseyside Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum, which are both situated in the same building, a short walk from where the Museum of Liverpool Life used to be.

On William Brown Street in the city centre you can find two popular atrractions, World Museum Liverpool and the Walker Art Gallery. Nearby is the National Conservation Centre.

Two major exhibitions currently feature a lot of the Museum of Liverpool's collections:

  • Magical History Tour at Merseyside Maritime Museum until 27 September 2009 - following 800 years of Liverpool history, from medieval 'Lyverpoole' to 21st century 'Livercool', the European Capital of Culture.
  • The Beat Goes On at World Museum Liverpool until 1 November 2009 - the story of Liverpool music, from The Beatles to The Zutons

Admission to all the National Museums Liverpool venues is FREE. All exhibitions, events and activities at National Museums Liverpool are also FREE.
