A law introduced to protect farmers in Britain after the Napoleonic Wars. During the wars there was less foreign corn imported to Britain so farmers here could charge more for bread etc. When the wars ended foreign corn could be imported again so the price of British corn fell.

The Corn Laws prevented foreign corn from being imported easily. This aimed to protect farmers from falling prices but just led to higher food costs and general unrest.
