Planning the exhibition

Obviously the first thing we do is decide what our exhibition will be about. This could be anything from Henry VIII to creepy crawlies. Once we’ve got our theme we think about:

  • the objects and information we would like to include
  • when we will hold the exhibition
  • where we will hold it (there are eight museums at National Museums Liverpool)
  • We also need to think about the number of people who will visit the exhibition and how we make their day special.

You can try your hand at figuring out how many visitors we might have (try clicking on PLAY THE PUZZLE at the top!) or you can continue on the tour.

Calculate the Crowds Puzzle

When we estimate how many people will come we look at other exhibitions and see how many people visited them. We think about:

  • the time of year - more people come in summer
  • who it is for - more people come to fun, children's exhibitions, especially during school holidays
  • the theme - famous names attract visitors
  • how long the exhibition runs - more days means more people will visit
  • which venue -some of our museums are more popular than others

So, think about these things and the figures below and work out how many people will come to our exhibition. Let’s say it is about Cuddly Toys and will run from the mid-May until early September (about 18 weeks) at World Museum Liverpool.

We would expect about 69,000 people.

Look at the figures for the Dinosaurs exhibition. Like Cuddly Toys it is a very popular topic and appeals to children. It also ran during the summer holidays at World Museum Liverpool. However, it ran for 252 days (36 weeks) during the summer, twice the length of our exhibition, so we halve the number of visitors figure to get 69,000. Remember that this is only an estimate and the real numbers could be a lot different.
