Trafalgar Festival

A year of features and events to mark the bicentenary of the battle of Trafalgar

2005 sees the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, Britain's greatest naval victory. On 21 October 1805 the British navy, led by Admiral Lord Nelson, defeated the forces of the French commander, Napoleon Bonaparte in a battle which established Britain's supremacy at sea and freed the country from fear of invasion by Napoleon's armies. Nelson was killed, but died knowing victory was his.

To mark this anniversary National Museums Liverpool is holding a year-long series of events and displays covering subjects as diverse as the conservation of Liverpool's Nelson memorial, a study of the paintings of The Death of Nelson at the Walker Art Gallery and a feature on Lady Hamilton, Nelson's mistress. Activities and articles relating to these exhibits will be featured here, so remember to come back. However, to whet your appetite there are already sections covering Napoleon Bonaparte, the famous battle, and the life of the Admiral himself.
