Bird Charger
A charger is a large flat dish. This example was made by the artist
VT Fisher. It is made from earthenware and decorated with a finch design.
It was made by the Royal Copenhagen porcelain manufactory in 1903, and
then purchased from the works in 1916. The factory, founded under the
patronage of Queen Juliane Marie of Denmark in 1775, was one of the first
factories outside Germany to regularly produce china dinnerware and porcelain
figurines.
The polychrome pigments were mixed in a liquid, and then applied to
the fired piece. The glaze was then applied and the piece re-fired. It
is one of the simplest yet most permanent forms of ceramic decoration.
