This painting is one of a series entitled 'Hamburg'. Sutcliffe was influenced by the European artists of the time including the grid forms of Eduardo Paolozzi, who taught him at Hamburg Art School. The textured surface and the subtle colour changes combine to create an atmospheric and energetic work.

This painting is in the 20th century collections at the Walker Art Gallery. The display of 20th century paintings at the gallery does change regularly, so please contact the information desk on 0151 478 4199 before your visit to check if this painting is on show.
