Childhood‘Childhood – Head of a Girl’ 1896W Goscombe John (1860 – 1952)Bronze, height 40cm
This is a bust of the artist’s only daughter, Muriel, aged four. It is cast in gilt bronze and set on a marble base. Although it is obviously a tender image of his daughter, Goscombe John has avoided overt sentimentality. Instead he has concentrated on producing an honest and realistic work. Such concerns were typical of the ‘New Sculpture’ movement. 'New Sculpture' brought a new poetic realism into British sculpture. It engaged with a wider range of techniques, subject matter and pose than most other British sculptors of the time. It was seen as a reaction to the neo-classicism of sculptors such as John Gibson and his followers. This bust is currently on display at the Lady Lever Art Gallery. In this section
