This imaginary scene of childhood innocence shows two children who are so fond of their puppy they want it to take part in their bathtime. Whether any dog in this situation would be quite as fond of its owners is another matter entirely!

This picture was probably painted for use as a soap advertisement, as it is inscribed 'PEARS'. A Pears advertisement of 1915 reproducing it has been traced but the painting was probably used for this purpose well before that date.

TJ Barratt of A and F Pears pioneered the use of contemporary British paintings for soap advertisements in the late 1880s. His competitor William Hesketh Lever, the first Lord Leverhulme, started using paintings in the same way shortly afterwards to advertise Sunlight Soap. Lever eventually took over A and F Pears in 1916.

This painting and 'Besieged' were presented to the Lady Lever Art Gallery by Lever Brothers in 1983 as part of a collection of soap advertisement pictures for both Sunlight and Pears soaps.
