Book of PealsThis ledger, entitled 'The peals rung at various churches', describes the ringing of church bells at various London parish churches. Dating from 1818 it lists each church with a description of how the peals were rung, with a colour, hand drawn image of each building alongside. Objects like this are important because of their connection to a culture or civilisation. They are classed as 'cultural objects' and protected from illegal export under laws governed by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. This ledger was seized by HM Customs and Excise service some time in the 1980s, probably because it was presented for export without adequate documentation. This ledger from the collections of HM Revenue and Customs. It is not presently on display. |
