Zoom into the detail of this painting
Robert Walker Macbeth was born in Glasgow on 30 September 1848, the second son of Norman Macbeth, a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. Following in his father's footsteps, he received his early art training in the schools of the Royal Scottish Academy. A prolific and versatile painter, he moved to London at the age of 23. In 1883 he was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy and twenty years later he was advanced to full membership.
He also won distinction as an etcher, having interpreted the chief works of Fred Walker and George Heming Mason with real sympathy.
