The Tinne collection is probably the largest surviving collection of period clothes from one person's wardrobe in Britain. It consists of 700 items dating from between about 1910 and 1940, which formerly belonged to Mrs Emily Margaret Tinne and her family. The collection was the subject of a major exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery in 2006, A Passion for Fashion.
Perhaps surprisingly, Emily's shoes, or at least those that have survived in the collection, are on the whole rather workaday in style. They are all excellent quality but include no glamorous evening shoes to match her evening dresses. Her daughter Alexine remembers that her mother was not especially interested in 'dressy' shoes.
