Wedgwood lobster design salad bowl with pair of serversAwarded to WW Smith, winner of an 1887 road cycling race
William Wilkinson Smith, a Liverpool mercantile marine chief engineer, was awarded this Wedgwood lobster salad bowl and servers as first prize in a road cycling race in 1887. He is pictured here with his Ordinary Bicycle. The silver band around the rim of the salad bowl bears the inscription
A certificate of authentication from Josiah Wedgwood & Sons Ltd states that the bowl is decorated with pattern C2457 - sea-weed and sprigs, and is supported on three lobsters in 'extra coral red'. The pair of silver servers with lobster claw handles are also in the same extra coral red. The set was made in 1887 for ordinary sale. The items were passed down through the Smith family via William's daughter Miss M Smith. They were then gifted to her cousin Mr Brennan, who very kindly donated them to the collections of the Museum of Liverpool Life in 2002. Accession numbers MMM.2002.91.1a-c In this section
