Rules for Deck Sports

Pacific Steam Navigation Company pamphlet, c1950s

Cover image showing people playing sports on deck

Before cheap air travel became available in the 1970s, most people entering or leaving the country had to go by ship. Travelling on ocean liners to faraway destinations could take several days, so a variety of deck sports would often be available to keep passengers entertained during their journey.

The Pacific Steam Navigation Company was a shipping line operating one of the most successful services from Europe to South and Central America during the twentieth century. Consequently it was in the interest of good service and good business that PSNC produced their passenger information in both English and Spanish, including the instructions for Deck Tennis (Tennis De Cubierta).

This pamphlet is from the Maritime Archives and Library collection. Reference number PSNC/5/1/8
