Dixie Dean trophy shield

wooden shield with footballer figure and engraved medallions

This shield was presented to William Ralph Dean (Dixie Dean), one of the greatest Everton players of all time, for his individual goalscoring record of 60 League goals in a single season - a record which remains unbeaten to this day. It is inscribed:

'Presented to William Ralph Dean (Everton and England) by The Everton F.C. Supporters Federation Club. To Commemorate his Football League Goal Scoring Record of 60 League Goals. Season 1927-1928'

The smaller medallions on the shield represent the matches that Dixie scored goals at that season. Each one is individually engraved with the team played, an H or A for a Home or Away match and the number of goals Dixie scored. (You can also see an arrow which someone, presumably a proud Evertonian has added which points to the game against Liverpool Football Club!). This record breaking season of 1927-28 also saw Everton claiming the League Championship.

Dixie was born in Birkenhead in 1907, and was signed to Everton from Tranmere Rovers for £3,000 in 1925. In total he made 433 appearances at Everton, scored 383 Everton Goals, captained for the club, helped secure First and Second Division Championship victories, FA Cup success, 2 Charity Shield wins and also gained 6 England caps.
