This painting depicts a scene from the Hillsborough disaster of 15 April 1989. The disaster took place at the Hillsborough stadium, the home ground of Sheffield Wednesday FC, where Liverpool FC were due to play Nottingham Forest FC for an FA Cup semi final match. Serious overcrowding in the areas allocated to Liverpool's supporters led to a dangerous crush which resulted in the death of 96 people and numerous injuries.

The painting is one of the Walker Art Gallery's un-catalogued continental European paintings, drawings and sculptures purchased since 1984.
