Mounted arctic fox
The arctic fox is well adapted for survival in cold, snowy conditions. It has a dense woolly coat which is white in winter and brown in summer, although there are also bluish-grey coloured animals. It will take any available animal food, which it often stores for later use, and follows polar bears or wolves to feed on the remains of their kills. It is found in areas of tundra and ice covered waters of the Arctic, where it undertakes long migrations usually in relation to food availability. This specimen was obtained in 1970 for display in the natural history gallery of Liverpool Museum, which is now World Museum Liverpool. Following a refurbishment of the gallery in 2006, visitors can now see it in the Endangered Planet display. Quite appropriately, it is shown following a polar bear.
