Pocket barometer/altimeter by F Kuhn, Luzern.

A barometer measures atmospheric pressure. Changes in air pressure are linked with changes in the weather.

Small pocket barometers were popular with mountaineers and travellers. The one shown above also incorporates an altimeter, making it ideal for mountaineering.

The stick barometer below was made by Baird and Tatlock in about 1920-30 and it still works today. It was generously donated to World Museums Liverpool's physical science collections by James Hamilton from Prestatyn.
