Man showing a 'heroes & heroines' t-shirt

What sort of paintings inspire you? Those with flame-haired Pre-Raphaelite muses or striking 20th century works?

To celebrate National Poetry Day 2009 we ran a poetry competition asking you to get inspired by a painting at the Walker Art Gallery, write a poem about it and send it to us. The theme for 2009's National Poetry Day was 'heroes and heroines', so there were lots of paintings to choose from the gallery on this theme.

We've now published a selection of the poems entered - explore the gallery below and have a read! The winning poem was by Adam Fuller and was inspired by 'Perseus and Andromeda' by Lord Leighton. It is entitled 'Shining Saviour' and you can read it here.
