John Brett - 1832 to 1902

Chronology

1831
8 December. Born near Reigate, Surrey, son of an army veterinray surgeon. Showed an early interest in astrology and art.

1853
22 April. Entered Royal Academy Schools as a student. Deeply impressed by John Ruskin's writing on art and geology. Contact with Pre-Raphaelite circle of artist through Coventry Patmore.

1856
First exhibited at Royal Academy. Visited the Alps where met J.W. Inchbold who featured his more meticulous approach to detail in nature.

1857
Exhibited 'The Stonebreaker' (Walker Art Gallery) at the Royal Academy.

1858
Several trips to Switzerland.

1860's
By late 60s changed to looser style. Subjects increasingly seascapes.

1869
Married Mary Anne Howcraft

1871
Elected Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society

1873
Painted 'Rocks: Scilly' (Walker Art Gallery)

1881
Elected Associate of the Royal Academy

1897
Painted 'Trevose Head' (Walker Art Gallery)
