John Brett - 1832 to 1902
- 1831
- 8 December. Born near Reigate, Surrey, son of an army veterinray surgeon. Showed an early interest in astrology and art.
- 1853
- 22 April. Entered Royal Academy Schools as a student. Deeply impressed by John Ruskin's writing on art and geology. Contact with Pre-Raphaelite circle of artist through Coventry Patmore.
- 1856
- First exhibited at Royal Academy. Visited the Alps where met J.W. Inchbold who featured his more meticulous approach to detail in nature.
- 1857
- Exhibited 'The Stonebreaker' (Walker Art Gallery) at the Royal Academy.
- 1858
- Several trips to Switzerland.
- 1860's
- By late 60s changed to looser style. Subjects increasingly seascapes.
- 1869
- Married Mary Anne Howcraft
- 1871
- Elected Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society
- 1873
- Painted 'Rocks: Scilly' (Walker Art Gallery)
- 1881
- Elected Associate of the Royal Academy
- 1897
- Painted 'Trevose Head' (Walker Art Gallery)
- 1902
- Died Putney, 8 January
