This catalogue by Glenys Davies lists 54 ash chests, 47 ash chest lids, two cinerary vases, and twelve other assorted funerary monuments, reliefs and inscriptions which all belonged to Henry Blundell of Ince Blundell Hall, Lancashire. These Roman marble monuments are only part of a much larger collection of sculpture acquired by Blundell in the late 18th century, much of it from Rome. All the sculpture in this volume had a funerary purpose, either as a container for the physical remains of the deceased or to commemorate them for posterity (and in many cases both). Sarcophagi will be included in a seperate volume: the one sarcophagus included here (no 113) appears in this volume only because Henry Blundell mistakenly thought it was an ash chest.
