Nicholas Robinson (1769 - 1854) was a prosperous corn merchant who bought the Sudley estate and built the house in the first years of the 19th century. He was mayor of Liverpool in 1828-9 and this portrait shows him in his mayor’s robes. After his death, his daughters lived at Sudley until it was purchased by George Holt.
