13th - 16th century galleries - part one

Although the Walker Art Gallery was not founded with a specific policy to collect works from this period, it has acquired many pieces of outstanding quality. The majority of the works comes from two private collections amassed by the 19th century Liverpool collectors William Roscoe and Joseph Mayer.

Here you can see some of the earliest works from the Walker Art Gallery's collection. Most of these have a religious theme. This reflects the church's role as the main patron of the arts during the middle ages and early Renaissance.

Please note that this is only a selection from our collection.
