'The Lamentation over the Dead Christ', Master of the Virgo inter Virgines, c.1486-7
Panel, 55.2 x 56.3cm
Accession number: WAG 1014
This anonymous artist was a leading figure in the Northern Netherlands during the late 15th century. His name comes from one of his works which shows the Virgin and Child among four holy virgins, held in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
His works are distinguished by their austere colouring, emotional piety and ability to express overwhelming grief. This scene's poignant and horrific drama is emphasised by the desolate landscape and skull-like heads of the richly-dressed figures.
