'River scene with a ferry boat', Salomon van Ruysdael, 1650

This painting has a very low horizon. There is a boat carrying people, trees, houses and a church in the background. This seems darker compared to a light sky with delicate clouds.

Oil on canvas, 106 x 152cm

Accession Number WAG1022

Salomon van Ruysdael came from a family of artists but little is known of his training. His paintings represent a calm, luminous world.

Ruysdael was not concerned with producing an exact copy of a landscape. Instead he brought together characteristic elements of the Dutch countryside to form an ideal yet naturalistic-looking landscape.

Bequeathed by EE Cook through the National Art Collections Fund.
