A study of 'Catherine Madox Brown', 1852, Ford Madox Brown
19cm x 16.5cm
Accession Number WAG10507
This is one of five studies drawn between 1847 and 1857 depicting Madox Brown’s four children. They are part of a substantial group of drawings of his children made for personal record and also as studies for future paintings.
The second daughter, Catherine (1850 - 1927) was born to his second wife, Emma. She modelled for several figures in her father’s paintings including the child in ‘Waiting’ and ‘The Nosegay’.
Cathy became an artist. She married a music critic Franz Hueffer. Their eldest son became famous, after a change of surname, as the novelist Ford Madox Ford.
