'Vespers', John Singer Sargent, 1909

On the right a dark, shadowy figure is contrasted against a pathway set between a doorway and a set of columns.

Oil on canvas, 71 x 91.5cm

Accession Number WAG2634

Rapid, dazzling brushwork made Sargent the outstanding portraitist of his day. His virtuoso technique is here applied to a outdoor scene. It was painted during a visit to Corfu in 1909. Its spontaneity and rendering of sunlight is similar to the work of the French Impressionists.
