'Hamburg Painting No. 2' 1961 - Stuart Sutcliffe

The canvas is broken by a coloured patch that contrasts against the plainer paint on the outside. The coloured part has lots of circular patches, scratched into with contrasting colours.

Sutcliffe left Liverpool in 1960 to play bass guitar with The Beatles in Hamburg night clubs. At the same time he attended Hamburg Art School. His tutor was Eduardo Paolozzi. This work is one of a series entitled 'Hamburg'. Sutcliffe was influenced by the European artists of the time, including in the grid forms Paolozzi himself. The textured surface and the subtle colour changes combine to create an atmospheric and energetic work.
