The artist was born in Ireland, studied in Dublin and lived briefly in London before coming to Liverpool in 1960. He wrote of this painting that his aim had been to adapt the techniques of American gestural paintings of the 1950s and "Cornball" (his term for the St. Ives artists in Britain) to the fashionable Pop idiom of the younger generation. Walsh paid homage to Bacon, whose work he genuinely admired, by jokily turning him into a quasi- Pop star or model.
