Carved and stained buffalo horn and glass set with gold and silver paper, designed by Georges Pierre, France, about 1900

Many designers in the Art Nouveau period, including Pierre, were keen to experiment with unusual natural materials, such as buffalo horn. This piece is carved in the form of two butterflies alighting on a central glass bead.
